There were a lot of parties since I was in my late grandfather's house, and all noticed that I was his heir. And it was my first one that I went one evening with Basil to know all the noble lordships. However, the first thing I got to hear there was, that my suit was to be shabby. This just told me an old codger who clung desperately to his drink.
Basil assured me that my suit was definitely very respectable. And shortly afterwards he immediately offered to get us drinks. And when I looked at the round so, this was not to endure otherwise. Elderly ladies, but definitely still had its charm. Followed by young chickens that looked at me like I was fresh prey and began to giggle ashamed when my eyes had found them.
[Lord Henry / Harry] "Cigarette?"
Said a gentleman in the best age, sneaked to my side and held me a
silver cigarette under the nose.
[Me] "No, thank you.", I politely declined as I looked at him over my shoulder and remained polite. Even though I immediately felt uncomfortable.
[Lord Henry / Harry] "Hmm ... A cigarette is the perfect pleasure. Exquesit and it's leaves you unsatisfied." He lit his cigarette, without paying too much attention to me, and sounds of the lit matchstick frightened me. I hoped this unpleasant Lord would leave of his own, but unfortunately, he was persistent. "You are Kelso's grandson?"
[Me] "Yes. Did you know him?"
[Lord Henry / Harry] "Little. But enough to clink glasses, as he took his last breath." And this bad taste, made me look at him with a repulsive sight. "You must be the legacy of the old he goat? So poor is not the little orphan.", were Harry's words, and he looked around in the round, just like me, waiting for Basil. "An honest man of good character. Sounds Aghata. I had a badly dressed boor in mind." He paused and crept around me like a tiger to the cow. "Because I'm right only partially. Half as bad." He shrugged. "She dresses for her 40th as it is the 14th." Harry said, and our eyes were on an older lady. She had terrible hair and her smile was so wide that you could see the last teeth of the upper and lower serration. And this without effort. "Radley in turn." The man continued in his statement and now I finally knew the name of the man who had insulted my suit. "Radley in turn, looks like a tattered hymnal.", He made me smile and offered me back on his cigarettes. "Are you sure you do not want one? They are directly from Cairo."
And I let myself be persuaded. I wanted to try one and do not even appear rude. At this moment, Basil came back. In his hands he held our drinks and said.
[Basil] "So you already know our lovely host. Pay absolutely no attention to any word he says."
[Lord Henry / Harry] "How rude." Harry rolled his eyes, just a little bit. "Henry Wotton." He made me wonder and made me feel bad. "Victoria, my wife. My aunt you know already.", Two ladies came to us, nodded lovely and Harry's aunt said.
[Aunt] "The boy can teach you manners." She giggled and held me close to her side. And somehow I had the feeling that she had taken a fancy to me.
[Harry's wife] "There are new guests to offend."
[Lord Henry / Harry] "She's good for something. I hope we see you, Mr. Gray." Harry had wished, lit my cigarette and had left our small round with his wife.
[Me] "Thank you .. for the cigarette.", I coughed and looked after him.
[Basil] "Getting used to."
[Me] "Oh no, it's quite pleasant.", I said, still coughing a bit and tried to assure him.
[Basil] "No. I meant Harry." Basil sounded not joking and not so seriously. And while Harry's aunt giggled, she pulled me with her, to introduce me to the next merry company. --> ( Dorian Gray on Facebook )
